Legacy Health has agreed to a $2 Million settlement to resolve claims that it shared patients’ private information with two of the world’s largest tech companies. The case is part of a broader wave of privacy settlements targeting healthcare providers over the use of third-party tracking tools on their digital platforms.
Katherine Layman filed the lawsuit alleging that Legacy Health transmitted patients’ personally identifiable information to Meta Platforms Inc. (Facebook) and Alphabet Inc. (Google) without their knowledge or consent. The complaint asserted claims for breach of confidence, breach of implied contract, unjust enrichment, and negligence. Legacy Health denied any wrongdoing. Rather than proceed to trial, both parties agreed to settle the case to avoid the costs, risks, and uncertainties of continued litigation. The settlement was preliminarily approved by the Circuit Court of Multnomah County on December 29, 2025. A Final Approval Hearing is scheduled for April 16, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. PT to determine whether the court will grant final approval.
Legacy Health Data has not admitted any wrongdoing as part of the agreement.
This settlement stems from Katherine Layman v. Legacy Health, Case No. 25CV40104, Circuit Court of Multnomah County, Oregon.
The settlement covers a specific group of Legacy Health patients. Here is who qualifies as a class member:
This is a nationwide settlement, so where you live does not affect your eligibility.
To file, you will need your name, address, and Unique ID number from the settlement notice you received. No additional documentation is required. Claims can be submitted online using your Unique ID and Claim Login PIN, or by mailing a completed Claim Form.
Still not sure if you qualify? The Legacy Health Data Class Action Settlement page has a quick eligibility checker that can tell you in seconds whether you are a class member.
The claim submission deadline is March 16, 2026, which is less than two weeks away. If you believe you qualify, filing sooner rather than later is advisable.
The $2 Million settlement funds two distinct benefits for class members. Here is how the payout structure breaks down:
Attorney fees, which courts typically approve at 25 to 33 percent of the total settlement fund, are deducted before any payments reach class members.
For the full payout breakdown, see the Legacy Health Data Class Action Settlement page.
There are two ways to submit your claim for the $15 cash payment. All class members also receive an automatic benefit that requires no action.
Visit the official settlement claim form and enter your Unique ID and Claim Login PIN from your settlement notice. Filing online is required if you want payment by electronic transfer or ACH.
Download the Claim Form from the settlement website and complete it with your name, address, and Unique ID. Mail your completed form to:

The $15 cash payment here is modest, but the Medical Shield Complete benefit adds real value: a year of credit monitoring, dark web scanning, and $1,000,000 in identity theft insurance delivered automatically, with no extra steps required. For patients whose health portal data may have reached Facebook or Google, that protection is the more substantive part of this settlement.
The full Legacy Health Data settlement details page has complete payout information, eligibility criteria, and step-by-step filing instructions to help you submit before the March 16, 2026 deadline.
Yes. All class members are automatically enrolled in one year of Medical Shield Complete, which includes credit monitoring, dark web monitoring, and $1,000,000 in identity theft insurance, at no cost. No claim submission is required to receive this benefit. Check the official settlement notice for the full list of features included with the service.
Missing the March 16, 2026 deadline means forfeiting your right to a cash payment from this settlement. Class action deadlines are firm, and courts do not typically grant extensions for individual claimants. If you think you may qualify, filing before the cutoff is the only way to preserve your claim.
Settlement payments are typically distributed after the claims deadline has passed and all submissions have been reviewed. This process can take several months, as the administrator needs to verify all claims before distributing funds.
