What is Class Member?

Class action glossary term

Short Definition

Someone who falls within the court-approved class definition and is eligible to receive settlement benefits (unless they opt out).

What It Means

Whether you’re a class member depends on the class definition (who, what product/service, where, and when). Class members may need to file a claim to get paid, or they may be paid automatically if the defendant has good records.

Example

Example: “All U.S. customers who bought Product X between Jan 1, 2022 and Dec 31, 2023.”

Why It Matters

If you’re a class member and don’t opt out, you’re typically bound by the settlement’s release.
