Eligible States
To get paid from the Google settlement:
Claim Form requires attestation under penalty of perjury. Purchaser Settlement Class claimants must provide proof of purchase (e.g., receipt) for each Google-Made Device claimed, up to 3 devices maximum. Privacy Settlement Class claimants must attest to good faith belief that their communications were recorded as result of False Accept or disclosed to third-party review vendor. Optional Unique ID and PIN from email notice simplifies verification.
Google settlement payments are variable and will not be known until after the claim deadline passes. The net settlement fund is divided proportionally based on a points system: Purchaser Settlement Class members receive 4 points per eligible Google-made device claimed, up to a maximum of 3 devices (12 points total). Privacy Settlement Class members receive 1 point. Your share is calculated based on your points relative to the total points across all valid claims. Payment will be sent by the method you choose on your claim form, including PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, ACH, or paper check. Payments will be issued only after the court grants final approval and any appeals are resolved.
Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California as In re Google Assistant Privacy Litigation, No. 4:19-cv-04286, this case alleges that Google Assistant can activate and record conversations without the user ever saying a wake word like “OK Google” or “Hey Google.” Plaintiffs call these incidents “False Accepts” and claim Google used the resulting audio recordings to improve its speech recognition technology. They argue this violated users’ privacy rights and breached Google’s own Privacy Policy.
Google denied all allegations and maintained it did nothing improper or unlawful. No court ruled on the merits. Both sides agreed to settle to avoid the uncertainty and expense of a trial. The proposed $68 million Settlement Fund will be distributed to eligible class members who submit valid claims, with any remaining funds going to a court-approved nonprofit rather than back to Google.
The case covers two groups: people who purchased Google-made devices and people whose communications were captured through a False Accept, during the period May 18, 2016 through March 19, 2026. The court has scheduled a Final Approval Hearing for October 1, 2026. For more information, visit the official settlement website.
