To get paid from the MUBI settlement:
Settlement Class Members must attest under penalty of perjury that they are a Class Member and that the information supplied in the Claim Form is true and correct to the best of their knowledge, information, and belief. No documentation (receipts, account statements, etc.) is required.
MUBI settlement payments are a pro rata share of the $1,600,000 settlement fund after deducting attorneys’ fees, administration costs, and the class representative’s incentive award. The exact amount per person depends on how many valid claims are submitted. Payment options include a prepaid Mastercard, PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, or a mailed check, at your election. Payments will be distributed after the court grants final approval and any appeals are resolved. The final approval hearing is scheduled for July 16, 2026, and payment distribution may take additional time after that.
Plaintiff Cesar Cejudo sued MUBI, Inc., a global streaming service, production company, and film distributor, alleging the company failed to give California subscribers adequate notice that their subscriptions would automatically renew. The lawsuit also claimed MUBI did not obtain sufficient consent before charging customers for renewals. Those practices, according to the complaint, violated California’s False Advertising Law and Unfair Competition Law.
MUBI denied all allegations and continues to deny any liability or wrongdoing. Neither side went to trial. Both agreed to settle to avoid the cost and uncertainty of litigation, and to provide compensation to affected subscribers. The settlement covers renewals that occurred between April 1, 2021 and May 31, 2025 for California-based subscribers who did not receive a full refund of their renewal charges.
To resolve the case, MUBI agreed to establish a non-reversionary $1,600,000 settlement fund. After deducting attorneys’ fees of up to 25%, administration costs, and an incentive award of up to $5,000 for the class representative, the remaining funds will be distributed equally among class members who file valid claims.
