The person (or small group) who represents the class and works with lawyers to pursue the case on everyone’s behalf.

What It Means

Lead plaintiffs are named in the lawsuit and have extra responsibilities (helping counsel, responding to discovery, etc.). They may ask the court for a service/incentive award to compensate for time and risk, but it must be approved.

Example: One consumer sues a company and the court later certifies a class of all affected customers.
