- Excluded: judges, magistrate judges, law clerks, Northwestern trustees, officers, directors, agents, attorneys, or employees (and their family members)
- Excluded: anyone who opts out of the settlement

What You Need to Do to Get Paid
To get paid from the Northwestern University settlement:
Claim Online/By Mail
No claim form is required. Eligible class members automatically receive payment. You may submit an Election Form to choose your payment method (check, Venmo, PayPal, or other digital option) or update your mailing address by the deadline at www.NorthwesternTuitionRefund.com or by mail to the Settlement Administrator. If you do not submit an Election Form, you will receive a physical check by mail.
No proof of purchase is required. Class members automatically receive settlement payments based on their enrollment records at Northwestern University.
Settlement Payout
Northwestern University settlement payments distribute the Net Settlement Fund based on which quarters you enrolled: Spring 2020 students receive approximately $153, Summer 2020 students receive approximately $61, and Fall 2020 students receive approximately $35. Students enrolled in multiple quarters receive payments for each. No claim form is required; eligible students receive automatic distribution by check, Venmo, PayPal, or other digital method if elected.

Background of the Lawsuit
Plaintiffs Nancy Quiroz, Surya Veeravalli, and Daniel Greenwald filed a class action lawsuit against Northwestern University alleging breach of contract and unjust enrichment. The plaintiffs claimed that Northwestern improperly transitioned in-person instruction and educational services to a virtual environment during Spring 2020, Summer 2020, and Fall 2020 quarters due to the COVID-19 pandemic without providing tuition refunds or reductions.
Northwestern denied all allegations and maintained it did nothing wrong. Rather than proceed to trial, both sides agreed to a settlement to avoid ongoing litigation costs and provide immediate relief to affected students. The settlement requires Northwestern to establish a $4,000,000 fund to compensate eligible class members without any admission of wrongdoing by Northwestern.
