Anthropic Class Action Settlement

If you’re an author or publisher, you may qualify for a major payout from the $1.5 billion Anthropic copyright class action settlement. The case claims Anthropic trained its β€œClaude” AI models using pirated copies of books pulled from shadow-library sites like LibGen and Pirate Library Mirror.

Early estimates suggest eligible authors could receive around $3,000 per book β€” one of the highest per-title payouts in any recent class action.

Who’s Eligible?

You’re part of the settlement if all of the following apply:

  • You own the copyright (legal or beneficial) to the book.
  • Your book appears in the LibGen or PiLiMi datasets allegedly used by Anthropic.
  • Your book has a valid ISBN or ASIN.
  • Your book was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office within 5 years of publication (or before Anthropic downloaded it).

The settlement covers roughly 500,000 titles. The only way to confirm eligibility is to check the official β€œWorks List.”

How Much Can You Get?

  • Estimated payout: ~$3,000 per eligible book
  • Paid per title β€” not per author
  • You can claim multiple books if you own the rights
  • Payment options: Check, Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, ACH

Final amounts depend on how many valid claims are filed.

Key Deadlines

  • Opt-Out Deadline: January 15, 2026
  • Objection Deadline: January 15, 2026
  • Claim Deadline: March 23, 2026

Case Background

The case, Bartz et al. v. Anthropic PBC (3:24-cv-05417), alleges Anthropic scraped and stored copyrighted books from shadow-library sites to train its AI models. Anthropic denies the allegations, arguing fair-use defenses, but agreed to a $1.5B settlement after the court granted preliminary approval on September 25, 2025.
