What is Opt-out Deadline / Exclusion Deadline?

Class action glossary term

Short Definition

The last day you can request exclusion (opt out) from the settlement/class.

What It Means

The opt-out deadline is listed in the notice and on the settlement website. If you miss it, you usually can’t opt out later. Opt-out requests often must be mailed and postmarked by the deadline, but each settlement’s rules control.

Example

Example: “Requests for exclusion must be postmarked by March 1.”

Why It Matters

If you want to sue separately, this deadline matters as much as the claim deadline.
